BLACK IS LIT
LITERACY IS LIBERATION. EDUCATION IS EMPOWERMENT.
AWAKENING BLACK GENIUS.
We believe that literacy is an act of liberation and essential to ensuring academic success for Black students. We are unwavering in our belief that Black students are inherently brilliant and that Black Genius awakens in culturally inclusive learning spaces that demand excellence. Thus, literacy proficiency is critical to liberating the educational experience for Black students to thrive academically. It is increasingly urgent that we address the Black Academic Epidemic plaguing our nation, as nearly 50% of Black students are below basic for 8th-grade reading proficiency levels.
PROUD OF OUR
LIT LEADERS.
Our Lit Leaders (high school) are learning to empower students and being developed as peer mentors and literary experts. They will facilitate Lit Circles and engage students in critical academic discourse based on analysis of the chosen text. Lit Leaders began their leadership and literacy development on January 31st to ensure leadership readiness for the summer campaign. The Lit Seminars will culminate in the creation of a Social Change Project that will span the upcoming academic year. Subsequently, Lit Leaders will project manage and collaborate with their Lit Krew after the summer campaign. The project will focus on a social injustice highlighted in the text that will become their call to action to enact change for the community.
